Since 1991, he has served as the chief counsel of the American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ). He was the lead outside counsel for President Donald Trump’s first impeachment trial in the United States Senate as a part of his legal team. Over the course of thirty years, Sekulow developed a legal and media empire by representing conservative, religious, and pro-life organizations. Sekulow worked as a prosecutor with the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) tax litigation division for “about 18 months” after graduating from law school. He then opened a law firm in Atlanta, Georgia, with former Mercer classmate Stuart J. Roth, which quickly evolved into a business buying, renovating, and selling historic properties as a tax shelter for wealthy investors. In the mid-1980s, IRS regulations changed, and the company went bankrupt when investors sued the founders for fraud and securities offenses. In 1987, Sekulow and Roth filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection, citing $13 million in obligations and $638,000 in assets, as well as “a trail of furious investors and employees.”

Sekulow joined Jews for Jesus as general counsel in 1987. He formed the nonprofit Christian Advocates Serving Evangelism (CASE) in 1988, and he, his wife, and their two kids serve on its board of directors. In 1992, Sekulow was named director of the American Center for Law and Justice, where he served as chief counsel and senior officer until 2018. He also joined the Regent University Law School faculty in the early 1990s. Roth is the governor and executive officer of the for-profit professional corporation Constitutional Litigation and Advocacy Group, P.C., which Sekulow owns half of.
