J Hype began beatboxing and singing at a young age. Before auditioning for ‘Boy Band,’ he participated in a number of local competitions and open mic nights. He then auditioned for the show ‘Boy Band’ which premiered on June 22, 2017. Its premise is straightforward: a group of young male vocalists competes to be a part of a new five-piece boy band. The five winners would be offered a recording contract with Hollywood Records. They would also perform the group’s debut single on the show’s finale. In its first season, the show was hosted by British singer and actress Rita Ora and featured an impressive panel of judges (architects) including Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter, Spice Girls’ Emma Bunton, and Timbaland.
J Hype performed on the first episode alongside 29 other contestants. In the first episode, he was placed in the group ‘Uplift,’ along with fellow contestants Sergio Calderon, Devin Hayes, Drew Ramos, Cameron Armstrong, and Marcus Pendleton. They performed ‘That’s What I Like’ by Bruno Mars. While his performance put him in the bottom three, Cameron Armstrong was the one who was eliminated in that episode. J Hype returned in the fourth episode as a member of the group Element. Element, comprised of Devin Hayes, Andrew Bloom, Jaden Gray, Miles Wesley, and J Hype, performed ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ by The Chainsmokers (ft. Daya). He and Andrew Bloom, Cam Jackson, and Michael Conor were assigned to the Leveled group in the sixth episode of the season. They sang Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” (ft. Charlie Puth). J Hype was eventually eliminated in the following episode after performing Nick Jonas ‘Jealous’ as part of the group New Wave with Marcus Pendleton, Mikey Jimenez, and Sergio Calderon. In January 2018, he released his first single, ‘Nice to Meet You,’ after leaving the show.
