Jawed Karim Career

Karim interned with Silicon Graphics Inc., an American high-performance computing manufacturer that produces both computer hardware and software, in 1998. He was assigned to work on 3D voxel data management for large data sets for volume rendering there. He was one of the first employees of PayPal, an American company that operates a global online payment system. He met two other early employees of the company, Steve Chen and Chad Hurley, there. YouTube, a video-sharing website, was founded by the three in 2005. Karim created and implemented several core PayPal components, including a real-time anti-fraud system. Karim created his YouTube channel ‘jawed’ on April 23, 2005, and uploaded his first video to the video-sharing website.

Karim became a company adviser after co-founding and developing YouTube with Chen and Hurley. Meanwhile, he continued his studies and enrolled at Stanford University to complete his bachelor’s degree in computer science. Karim became an informal adviser of the company rather than an employee at the time of the website’s launch in February 2005, in order to focus on his studies. Because of his smaller role in YouTube, Karim not only received a much lower share of the company than the other two co-founders, but he also went mostly unnoticed and out of the public eye as the third founder of YouTube until Google purchased the website for US$1.65 billion in November 2006. Karim was awarded 137,443 shares of stock.

In October 2006, he spoke about the history of YouTube at the University of Illinois’ annual ACM Conference. In May 2007, he became the University of Illinois’ youngest Commencement Speaker (and the 136th overall). In March 2008, he formed Youniversity Ventures with Kevin Hartz and Keith Rabois to launch a venture fund. In April 2009, he invested in the initial Seed round of Airbnb, Inc., a San Francisco-based company that operates an online marketplace and hospitality service. As a result, he became one of the company’s initial investors when it was founded in August 2008. Several of Karim’s programming articles have appeared in the United Business Media monthly journal, Dr. Dobb’s Journal (DDJ).
