She began her career as a flight attendant before landing a job at San Francisco radio station KFRC (now defunct). In 2008, she was appointed Director of the School of Communications and Media Technologies at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She still hosts charitable events and travels the world giving lectures. Yanehiro began her radio career at KFRC (since defunct). Evening Magazine started on August 9, 1976, as “Evening Show: MTWTF.” Because of its success, it was franchised to television markets around the United States, which produced their own versions, most notably PM Magazine.
Yanehiro worked for the original Evening Magazine for 14 years, from 1976 to 1990. She co-hosted HGTV’s “Appraise It!” for five seasons from 1998 to 2001. Yanehiro has hosted and produced documentaries for KVIE and KCSM-TV over the years. She has also held a radio show on KCBS. Yanehiro narrated the 1996 documentary “Starting Over: Japanese Americans After the War,” which examined the effects of Japanese Americans’ internment during WWII.[8She is the president of Jan Yanehiro, Inc., a partner of Fair Advantage, a director of Bank of Marin, a board member of Kristi Yamaguchi’s Always Dream Foundation, and a board member of the University of San Francisco’s Centre for the Pacific Rim.

She has received several Emmys for her work, the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Award from the United Nations of San Francisco, induction into the Academy of Television and Radio Hall of Fame in New York City, and induction into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Silver Circle in 2003. She was also named a Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of the United States of America and a California State University, Fresno Outstanding Alumnus. In May 2018, she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Academy of Art University.
