In 1999, Kern Lima was victorious in the Baywatch College Search and made an appearance in a television broadcast. She participated in the Miss USA 2000 pageant, which was hosted in Branson, Missouri, after winning the title of Miss Washington USA in late 1999. She applied on a dare to be a competitor in the first season of the reality television series Big Brother after thinking about a career in finance. The only remaining female houseguest from that season was Kern Lima. She began her career as a morning news anchor at KNDU in Tri-Cities, Washington, following her time on Big Brother. In addition, she was employed as a field reporter for KNDU in Kennewick, where she covered Pope John Paul II’s passing live from Vatican City.
She relocated to Portland, Oregon in 2006 to serve as a news anchor and reporter for KPTV after leaving KNDU. After experiencing problems with makeup products because of her rosacea and hyperpigmentation, Kern Lima co-founded IT Cosmetics in 2008. The company suffered in the years that followed as beauty merchants turned down her products. In a ten-minute QVC program, Kern Lima demonstrated how to apply IT Cosmetics concealers by wiping off her makeup and showing her naked skin. At the conclusion of the show, every product was sold out. In more than 1,000 live QVC appearances, Kern Lima helped IT Cosmetics grow to become the network’s biggest cosmetic brand. After IT Cosmetics was acquired by the L’Oréal brand, Kern Lima stayed with the company until August 2019.
