Adelstein joined the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper in 1993 as the first non-Japanese staff writer, a position he held for 12 years. After leaving the Yomiuri, Adelstein published an exposé detailing how an alleged crime leader, Tadamasa Goto, struck a deal with the FBI in order to gain admittance to the United States for a liver transplant at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Adelstein wrote Tokyo Vice, a book on his stint as a Japanese reporter, in 2009, in which he accused Goto of threatening to kill him over the story. Many people have questioned the validity of the stories presented in the memoir.
Adelstein went on to work as a writer for a US Department of State investigation into human trafficking in Japan, and she now writes for the Daily Beast, Vice News, The Japan Times, and other media. He is on the board of directors and serves as an advisor to the Lighthouse: Center for Human Trafficking Victims (previously Polaris Project Japan). Adelstein sued National Geographic Television, which had recruited him to help film a documentary about the yakuza, on April 19, 2011, citing ethical issues with their behavior in Japan. However, the judge rejected the lawsuit with prejudice, which means that the plaintiff cannot file the claim in another court.
