Jackie O Radio

Jackie had no intention of becoming a radio personality until she met Phil O’Neil, the night DJ at Sea FM on the Gold Coast, in early 1993. She had worked as an office girl and sandwich hand at a delicatessen at the time. After O’Neil accepted an offer to join FM104.7, she went to Canberra with him a few months later. After several rejections from management, they ultimately consented to have her as his ‘phone lady,’ despite the fact that no remuneration was offered.

Soon after, O’Neil accepted a job offer from Triple M Adelaide, but only if Jackie agreed to be his co-host, and it was at this point that she took the stage moniker “Jackie O.” When the next survey results were released, the duo’s ratings had more than doubled, significantly outperforming their primary competitor SAFM in the same time slot. [requires citation] Phil and Jackie were picked up by Fox FM in Melbourne after another increase in ratings in the next survey. After moving to 2Day FM in Sydney, their show was quickly networked (Hot 30).

During the late 1990s, the couple co-hosted a Network Ten music show called Ground Zero and the Hot 30 radio show until the couple split and O’Neil moved to the United Kingdom. Henderson’s radio career took off once she joined the Today Network as a co-host with “shock jock” Kyle Sandilands (broadcasting from Sydney station 2Day FM). At the start of 2005, the couple switched from drive time to breakfast. Until August 2009, they hosted the countdown show The Hot Hits.

Henderson has done voice-over work for the animated film Robots, portraying the character “Loretta Geargrinder” in the Australian release, in addition to radio, TV, and advertising appearances. Kyle and Jackie announced in August 2013 that they will be relocating from 2Day FM to KIIS 106.5FM. They had more than doubled the number of breakfast listeners at KiiS FM by March 2014, with their show being Sydney’s most popular FM show with 532,000 listeners, while 2Day FM lost 242,000 listeners during the transition.

Sandilands challenged Jackie O to write and record a song in one day in 2018, and the result, “Honey Money,” written by Avalonia and produced by KIIS FM producer Kian Oliver (who also provided a rap), went to number one on the Australian iTunes chart (#13 on the ARIA Digital Sales chart, spending one week within the Top 50), with all proceeds going to Drought Angels, a charity set up to help drought-affected Australian farmers. Because Jackie O’s visage had been quickly Photoshopped onto that of Iggy Azalea’s, the song was later withdrawn owing to a copyright infringement issue with the artwork. Jackie O stated that she will reupload the song for free.

Jackie O TV Career

Jackie has hosted a number of television programs, the most famous of which being the Popstars series, which included broadcast auditions for vocal groups. Jackie also hosted the Network Ten reality show Australian Princess in 2005, in which a group of women was converted into elegant “princesses.” In December, the second series of Australian Princess premiered on Network 10 during the non-ratings summer months. The Network provided no explanation for why it was shown outside of the official rating period.

She was a cast member of the Nine Network’s The Nation in June 2007. She was also a co-host on the same network’s comedy show Surprise Surprise Gotcha, which has been dubbed the Australian version of Punk’d, which became famous for pranking several celebrities. In October 2007, she and her radio partner Kyle Sandilands were tapped to replace Gretel Killeen as hosts of Big Brother Australia’s 2008 season. From 2001 through 2007, Killeen was the show’s host. Network Ten confirmed on 14 July 2008 that Big Brother Australia would not return in 2009 due to low ratings for the 2008 season. Jackie was confirmed as one of the guessers on The Masked Singer Australia in 2019.
