Coppola asked him to read her script for Palo Alto, a film based on James Franco’s book of the same name that she planned to direct as well. She asked him to advise whether the dialog was an authentic reflection of “kids today”. After a table read with her, Teddy, encouraged him to audition for one of the film’s main roles. Coppola videotaped him reading through the lines, which became his audition tape; he eventually won the role. Following his casting as Teddy, his father, actor Val Kilmer, was cast as the father of another character. Kilmer had never acted before filming Palo Alto when he was 16 years old.
Kilmer’s performance was described as “formidable,” “naturalistic,” and “sincere” when the film was released in May 2014 to mostly positive reviews. Kilmer finished high school in 2013. He intended for his role in Palo Alto to be a one-time gig before applying to colleges, but after the film’s completion, he decided to pursue acting full-time. Kilmer dabbled in high-fashion modeling in 2014, posing for portraits in Saint Laurent’s Permanent Collection and walking the runway in the brand’s 2015 spring-summer show. Kilmer provided extensive narration for the 2021 documentary Val, which chronicles his father’s life. Many critics who saw the documentary noted the similarity in voice between Kilmer and his father as a young man. Following a screening at the Cannes Film Festival, the film premiered on Amazon Prime on August 6, 2021.
