Monahan is a member of the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society. She received the AMS Seal of Approval for her professionalism in weather forecasting and reporting in 2004. She started her career as a reporter on WZON in Bangor, Maine. She won accolades from the Associated Press and the Maine Association of Broadcasters when she was there. Monahan subsequently headed south to work for WPXT-TV in Portland, Maine, as a weekend forecaster and entertainment reporter before joining NECN as a weekend meteorologist. Monahan announced in April 2006 that she was expecting a child in October. Monahan gave birth to a second daughter on March 28, 2012.

Monahan stated on April 8, 2013, that she will be quitting her meteorological post at WCVB in favor of joining Chronicle as a permanent co-anchor. For the first time since Chronicle veteran Mary Richardson retired in 2010, Monahan gives incumbent anchor Anthony Everett a full-time co-host. Monahan was succeeded in the weather department by Cindy Fitzgibbon, a former WFXT meteorologist who joined WCVB on a temporary basis in April 2013. Fitzgibbon began her permanent job on NewsCenter 5 EyeOpener on May 20, 2013, while Monahan continued to forecast for NewsCenter 5 Midday. Monahan was rumored to be moving to Chronicle in the near future.

Monahan was supposed to start at Chronicle in June, however on May 21, it was disclosed that her start date had been pushed up to May 23. Following Monahan’s departure, Fitzgibbon expanded her meteorological responsibilities to include the lunchtime news. Monahan was reported to be leaving WCVB at the end of her contract later that year on February 19, 2017. In June 2017, WBTS announced her employment with the station.
