Isabel Hagen was born in New York City, New York, and grew up in Manhattan. At age 12 she joined the pre-college program at the Juilliard School where she studied with Kenji Bunch for six years. She studied at the Juilliard School, earning a bachelor’s degree in 2013 and a master’s degree in 2015 in viola performance.

Hagen has toured internationally with the American Contemporary Music Ensemble, Alarm Will Sound, and Ensemble Signal. As a live musician, she has performed in many Broadway productions, including “Les Misérables,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “The Lion King,” and “Rocktopia.” She has collaborated with artists such as Björk, Max Richter, Country, and Steve Reich. In June 2022, Hagen participated in the 2022 American Viola Association Festival and the 47th International Viola Congress. During her sophomore year, Hagen created a YouTube video called “How to Convince People You’re Good at Chamber Music,” inspired by Jenna Marbles’s “How to Convince People You’re Beautiful.” The positive response from her fellow conservatory students gave her the confidence to pursue acting. After receiving her diploma, Hagen began attending open mic nights after developing recurring anxiety that prevented her from practicing for months.
She continued to perform stand-up comedy while working as a freelance artist. Four years later, he began using the viola in his work as a singer. Hagen won first place in the 2019 One Liner Madness tournament held at the Bell Tower in Brooklyn. In July 2019, Hagen was one of the new faces of comedy at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal. He became more well-known to viewers when he appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 11, 2020. He made his second appearance on the show, which also featured viola performances, on October 26, 2022. Hagen has also made several guest appearances on the show. In 2020-2021, Hagen hosted the podcast Good Times with Isabelle Hagen, where she spoke with other artists about the creative process and stressful work.
