She studied Social Work at the Universidad de Antioquia. She first appeared on the regional channel Teleantioquia, where she hosted several news shows. In 1998, she made her national television debut on Noticiero CM&. Three years later, she joined Telemundo, where she hosted the weekend edition of Noticiero Telemundo as well as a segment on the now-defunct morning show Cada Da con Mara Antonieta.
In 2005, she underwent a successful uterine tumor removal procedure. She left Telemundo in March 2007 to host the weekend edition of Univision Primer Impacto. Fernando del Rincon, the host of Primer Impacto, was fired in 2009, and Ilia became a regular co-host on the Monday-Friday edition with Barbara Bermudo, leaving the weekend edition to Satcha Pretto.

She made history in December 2017 when she took over for former co-anchor Maria Elena Salinas on Noticiero Univision.
