Career
Lee has published extensively in the Middle East, Europe and East Asia. Before joining CBS, he was CNN’s Jerusalem correspondent. Lee joined CNN in 2011 while he was stationed in Egypt, where he covered the uprising in the country and the aftermath of the 2013 uprising. He also briefly described the wars in Syria and Libya, covering both sides of the conflict. He was injured in 2011, when rebels were fighting for control of Sirte, the last stronghold of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, when a rocket exploded near him and killed a nearby medic. Lee talked about the seven-week war in Gaza in 2014. He is the first foreign journalist to come to Turkey after the failed coup attempt in 2016.
His work also includes reporting on the crisis in South Korea and the terrorist attacks in London. Lee moved to Jerusalem in 2017 to report on Israel and the Palestinian territories for CNN. His work there also included special training for the Israel Defense Force (IDF), the Palestinian Security Forces and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). He was the first journalist allowed by the Israel Defense Forces to cross from Lebanon to Israel through the Hezbollah border tunnel. PIJ also gave Lee rare access to tunnels and weapons used to attack Israel. Before joining CNN, worked as a reporter for the local Egyptian Daily News, covering the events leading up to the Arab Spring. During this time, he also worked as a freelance reporter for Time magazine and spent a year as a producer at Reuters.
