Altman and colleagues were also honored as editors for the front-page design of the City Paper’s issue commemorating the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Altman relocated to Tampa, Florida, and joined The Tampa Tribune as courts and cops editor in the Tribune’s converged newsroom with Tampa Bay Online (tbo.com) and the local NBC television affiliate, WFLA-TV. He assisted in the formation of the Continuous News Desk, which integrated all three platforms into one synchronized unit that he helped run. It transformed how and when news was distributed across platforms. Page visits and time spent on the site increased dramatically.
Given the strong military presence in Tampa Bay, Altman later became the Tribune’s military reporter. MacDill Air Force Base, the two unified combatant commands headquartered at MacDill AFB, the Avon Park Air Force Range, Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, numerous smaller US Coast Guard installations, various Reserve and National Guard facilities, two large Veterans Administration medical centers, and one of the largest active duty military, reserve military, retired military, and non-career military. Altman was named senior writer/military affairs for The Tampa Bay Times (formerly The St. Petersburg Times) after The Tampa Tribune was acquired by The Tampa Bay Times (formerly The St. Petersburg Times) in May 2016.
In addition to print media, Altman appears on local radio and television programs about military matters in the Tampa Bay area on a regular basis. Altman joined MilitaryTimes as senior managing editor after leaving Tampa Bay. MilitaryTimes sacked him in February 2022. The War Zone hired him as a staff writer in April 2022.
