Collins started her career with KFDX-TV in Wichita Falls, Texas. She eventually became an anchor for KKTV in Colorado Springs and KUSA in Denver, Colorado. She joined CNN in 2002, initially anchoring CNN Headline News. She eventually moved on to American Morning, the network’s morning news show, where she worked as a news reader and substitute co-anchor. Carol Costello replaced her on American Morning, and she went on to work as a correspondent/fill-in anchor for Anderson Cooper 360° through September 2006. Collins calls the 2008 Veteran’s Day interview with President George W. Bush on the deck of the decommissioned USS Intrepid the highlight of her career.

Collins was named on September 28, 2010, as an anchor for Minneapolis-Saint Paul station KMSP-TV Channel 9 News at 5 and 9 p.m., replacing the retiring Robyne Robinson. Her first broadcast occurred on Wednesday, October 13, 2010. On November 3, 2010, Collins interviewed recently re-elected Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, interrupting him multiple times and stating “I ask, you answer – Yes?” Collins was widely criticized for his aggressive tone throughout the interview, Kevin Hoffman of City Pages described it as “insanely hostile,” leaving “some viewers questioning her judgment and fairness.” Collins’ last day on KMSP-TV was July 29, 2013.
