Haywood Knowles Nelson, Jr. is an American actor. He is most known for his portrayal of Dwayne Nelson in the television series What’s Happening!! Nelson has been in the entertainment industry for over forty years.

He began his career at the age of six with multiple primary on-camera and voice-over national commercials, including Lavoris, Campbell’s Soup, Libby’s, Polaroid, Hot Wheels, Rock’em Sock’em Robots, and Johnny Lightning. Nelson has co-starred in several feature films, including If You Give a Dance, You Gotta Pay the Band, Mixed Company, This Property Is Condemned, and Evilspeak. Haywood also had a two-year run on Broadway as Thieves. Nelson appeared as Bobby Moore in the Kojak episode “The Godson”. At the age of 14, he appeared as the grandson of Whitman Mayo’s Grady on the television series Sanford and Son before moving on to the series Grady in 1975.

Haywood was 16 years old when he earned the role of “Dwayne” in the television series “Cooley High,” which later became the ABC popular series “What’s Happening!” for TOY Productions. Nelson was a “teenage heartthrob” on a popular television series and one of the first Black teen idols. Haywood’s studies in Architectural Design and Electronics Engineering were interrupted when the cast of What’s Happening!! reunited for three seasons of syndication in the series continuation What’s Happening Now!! for Columbia Pictures Television, where he also served as Technical Director. Haywood later featured in an urban dramatic Broadway production in New York’s Lincoln Center Alice Tully Hall, as himself, in the Paramount picture Dickie Roberts, and in the television series The Parkers.
