Smith began his broadcasting career at Denver radio stations KHOW and KIMN, as well as Cincinnati radio station WLW (1973–81). He worked for Denver’s public television station, KRMA-TV, from 1981 to 1982. From 1982 to 1985, he worked as a reporter and anchor for KMGH-TV, Denver’s then-CBS affiliate (the station is now affiliated with ABC). Smith joined CBS News as a reporter in 1986 and was promoted to correspondent in 1987.
Smith worked as a contributor to The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather, 48 Hours, and CBS News documentaries for thirteen years. He spent the majority of his time at CBS anchoring the CBS morning show. He was a co-anchor of CBS This Morning from November 30, 1987 to June 14, 1996. Smith was featured on the CBS Evening News in a weekly report called “Travels with Harry” after leaving the show, which looked at unusual people and places across the country.
