He teaches African-American literature, creative writing, and the genre of poetry. He is well known for his books on African-American studies and creative writing, as well as his novels Three to Get Ready, Honoring Juanita, and Without One, as well as The Coast Starlight: Collected Poems 1976-2006. In 1987, Ostrom began teaching composition at UC Davis, and later taught American Studies and English language classes at Gutenberg University in Germany.Ostrom has also written about Rudolph Fisher, Elizabeth Bishop, William Blake, and George Meredith. Poems and short fiction by Ostrom have published in numerous periodicals and anthologies. Three to Get Ready, Honoring Juanita, and Without One are his books, and The Coast Starlight: Collected Poems 1976-2006 is his poetry collection.

Since 1979, Ostrom’s poetry has featured in American and British literary periodicals. The poems in The Coast Starlight: Collected Poems 1979-2006 have been described as “genuine American poetry at its best” by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Karl Shapiro. Colors of a Different Horse: Rethinking Creative Writing Theory and Pedagogy, edited by Ostrom and Wendy Bishop, was a seminal collection of essays on teaching creative writing. His published fiction includes the mystery thriller Three to Get Ready (1991), which is being converted into a film starring Rose McGowan called Napa. Ostrom’s academic publications in African-American studies include two books on Langston Hughes: Langston Hughes: A Study of the Short Fiction and A Langston Hughes Encyclopedia.
