After a hospital scare in 2018, he announced he has Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune illness that begins when cells that generate insulin (beta cells) are killed by the immune system. Espiner departed TVNZ at the end of 2011 to join the reporting crew of TV3’s current affairs show 60 Minutes.

In 2014, he made the transition to radio, co-hosting Radio New Zealand’s Morning Report. Guyon conducted a series of interviews with five former New Zealand Prime Ministers in 2017 for RNZ’s The 9th Floor radio and video series, which will also be published as a book.
Guyon continues to write profiles for the Listener magazine on prominent business and political leaders. He retired from hosting in 2019 and currently works as an investigative journalist for Radio New Zealand, as well as writing for Listener Magazine.
