He then worked as a studio session singer for Amy Grant, Carman, Garth Brooks, Michael W. Smith, and others. Penrod was a member of Christ Church’s choir. He met Bill Gaither at a studio session and joined the Bill Gaither Vocal Band, where his powerful singing and vocal range garnered him a big following through Gaither’s various international Homecoming concerts.
Penrod has contributed to more than a dozen CDs released under the Bill Gaither Vocal Band alias. His powerful vocals and extensive vocal range propelled him to international popularity in 1994. He has appeared in Gaither Homecoming performances in both the United States and Canada.
Penrod was hired as the new host of Gospel Music Showcase, a renowned southern gospel music show on the Daystar Television Network. The show has received an Emmy nomination. In 2013, Penrod was selected “Soloist of the Year” at the National Quartet Convention. Worship, his third solo album, was released in May of 2014. His first solo Christmas album, “Christmas,” was released. It was the second most popular album in Cracker Barrel locations, trailing only Blake Shelton’s release in September 2014, with 30,000 sales sold. He and the Gaither Vocal Band were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame the following year.
The CD was a one-of-a-kind solo recording of songs he wrote while with the Gaither Vocal Band. He has frequently appeared as a guest artist on the “Grand Ole Opry” stage. With his seventh solo album, Penrod returned to the well of treasured hymns. In February of this year, Blessed Assurance was made available to the general public. Penrod performs 12 new songs on the CD, all of which feature his characteristic country flavor.
