Guy Grossi Career

Grossi completed a commercial cooking apprenticeship at the Box Hill Institute in 1980. At age fifteen, he started working in a Malvern fish eatery prior to advancing to Tolarno’s, where his dad drove the kitchen. Later, he moved into Massoni’s on Fitzroy Street, which was owned by David Gibson and his father, Leon Massoni. He and his wife Melissa opened Quadri, their own Armadale restaurant, following a stint at Two Faces. In 1988, Grossi’s father Pietro opened Caffé Grossi with them.

Grossi purchased The Florentino, an Italian restaurant in Melbourne, in 1999. Later on, he bought the Mirka Continental Bistro in St. Kilda, Victoria, and had the murals of the building restored by Mirka Mora, the original artist. When Mora and her husband Georges owned the Tolarno Hotel in the 1960s, the murals were first created.

The Grossi Trattoria and Wine Bar opened in 2009 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2010, he opened The Trader in the Rialto Pinnacles as a joint endeavor with Lorenz Grollo. In central Melbourne, Grossi opened the Ombra Salumi Bar in 2012 next to Grossi Florentino.
