He is the son of a Sindhi Sikh family. Following India’s partition, his family relocated to Bombay, where he was raised and schooled. He was the youngest of nine siblings. Kartar and Pratap Singh Lalvani, his brothers, are also businesspeople who co-founded Binatone with him. Kartar is also the founder of Vitabiotics, a nutraceutical company that is now handled by his son Tej Lalvani. Binatone was named after Gulu’s younger sister, socialite Bina Ramani (née Lalvani).
