He is the son of a Sindhi Sikh family. Following India’s partition, his family relocated to Bombay, where he was raised and schooled. He was the youngest of nine siblings. Kartar and Pratap Singh Lalvani, his brothers, are also businesspeople who co-founded Binatone with him. Kartar is also the founder of Vitabiotics, a nutraceutical company that is now handled by his son Tej Lalvani. Binatone was named after Gulu’s younger sister, socialite Bina Ramani (née Lalvani). In fact, he founded this business with his brothers, Pratap Singh and Kartar Singh, who used to import radios from Hong Kong. Later, the corporation was separated into three sections, each of which was based in a different part of the world. His company is currently the leading consumer electronics company in the United Kingdom. His brother Kartar Singh Lalvani, on the other hand, formed the Vitabiotics wing, which he and his son run.

It had gained a lot of traction in the UK telecommunications business a few years ago. Most notably, when the domestic telephone sector in the United Kingdom was included, it had a 15% market share.
