Gregory Gourdet Biography

Gregory Gourdet is an American chef, writer, restaurateur, and former finalist on Bravo’s American reality television series Top Chef, which aired in the twelfth and seventeenth seasons. He is the former executive chef and culinary director of Departure at The Nines in Portland, Oregon, as well as the owner of the pop-up restaurant Kann.

Gregory Gourdet Career

Gourdet went to work full-time for chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten after graduating from The Culinary Institute of America in 2000, honing his craft at three of Vongerichten’s restaurants before rising through the ranks to become one of his chef de cuisines.

Gourdet became Executive Chef of Departure Restaurant + Lounge in Portland, Oregon, in 2010, where he created modern Asian fare by combining Pacific Northwest ingredients with flavors and traditions from Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, and Korea. When the brand expanded to Denver, Colorado, he was promoted to Culinary Director in 2016.

Gourdet left Departure after ten years to focus on his own restaurant, Kann, a wood-fired concept that aims to bring the cuisine of his Haitian heritage and the Caribbean diaspora to the American spotlight. After COVID-19 postponed plans to open the restaurant, Gourdet launched a Portland Kann pop-up in Portland in 2020.

Kann will open in Portland in 2022. Gourdet rose to prominence on Bravo’s Top Chef Season 12 in 2015, where he finished runner-up. He went on to make numerous other television appearances, including another appearance on Top Chef: All-Stars L.A., where he finished as a finalist.
