Goldlink Career
GoldLink began his career as D’Anthony Carlos, his birth name. After graduating from Hayfield Secondary School, he began making music as a hobby, eventually recording tracks in a local studio in Falls Church, Virginia called Indie Media Lab. His first tracks were released on Bandcamp under the name Gold Link James. He began performing as GoldLink in 2013, releasing several free tracks on SoundCloud. In July 2014, GoldLink released his first mixtape, The God Complex. Complex named it one of the best projects released in the first half of 2014, Spin ranked it 19th on their list of the 40 Best Hip-Hop Albums of 2014, and Clash ranked it seventh on their list of the Top 10 Mixtapes of 2014.
In 2015, he began working with producer Rick Rubin. In November 2015, he released the mixtape After That, We Didn’t Talk, much of which was seen as a follow-up to The God Complex’s unanswered questions. Pigeons & Planes ranked it 19th on its list of the Best Albums of 2015. In 2015, GoldLink was also named to the XXL Freshman Class. In 2016, he announced that he had signed a major deal with RCA Records and that he was working on his second album. He released the single “Fall In Love,” which was produced by Canadian band BADBADNOTGOOD and Canadian producer and DJ Kaytranada and featured rapper Cisero. He later collaborated with TDE rapper Isaiah Rashad on the song “Untitled.” he participated in “Red Bull Sound Selects” in February 2017.
The singles “Crew” and “Meditation” came before it. “Crew” peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, becoming his highest charting single in the country. At the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, it was also nominated for Best Rap/Sung Performance. On June 7, 2018, GoldLink was featured on Christina Aguilera’s eighth studio album, Liberation, in the song “Like I Do,” which was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. Diaspora, his second studio album, was released on June 12, 2019. In an interview with Wonderland Magazine, he stated that due to a label agreement, he considered “At What Cost” to be his breakout mixtape and “Diaspora” to be his debut album.
GoldLink’s third studio album Haram! was released on June 18, 2021. In the lead-up to the album’s release, He began trolling his fellow rappers, tweeting insults and threats at Sheck Wes and sporting a fake facial jewel on his forehead in a July 13, 2021 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, in an apparent mockery of the facial jewelry trend popularized by Lil Uzi Vert and Sauce Walka. He continued his diss of Sheck Wes in the album’s first single, “White Walls.” he feud with Wes began in 2019 when his then-girlfriend Justine Skye accused Wes of abuse, stalking, and harassment.
