Her television career began in 1983, with stops at KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and KEYT-TV in Santa Barbara, California. She began working as a reporter and weekend anchor for KTLA in Los Angeles in 1985. She was recommended to KTLA by actor Fess Parker, who lived in Santa Barbara and was a friend of the station’s news managing director at the time. Fernandez moved to CBS-owned WBBM-TV in Chicago two years later, and in 1989 to WCIX, CBS’s newly acquired station in Miami. She caused a stir in Chicago in 1988 when she went boating with John Cappas, a wanted drug dealer, and then accompanied him to his arrest by federal agents.
She landed her first national news job with CBS News in October 1991, when she relocated to New York City and worked as a correspondent and backup anchor for the morning, evening, and weekend newscasts. She later joined NBC, where she hosted Weekend Today and the Sunday edition of NBC Nightly News, as well as filling in for Brian Williams on the Saturday edition and taking on various special reporting assignments in the United States and elsewhere.
