Giles Deacon Career
Before launching his own label, Deacon chose to travel and gain experience at various fashion houses. Deacon was hired to work with fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac in Paris, where he learned how to use a brand name commercially. During this time, Deacon met the owner of Bottega Veneta, an Italian luxury goods house, and was hired to work for the company, eventually becoming the head designer and debuting an acclaimed collection in 2000. Deacon was fired in 2001 after the Gucci group purchased the company and terminated his contract in order to hire German designer Tomas Maier. However, Tom Ford immediately hired him to assist with Gucci womenswear. Deacon was forced to leave Gucci after only one season due to an infected salivary gland.
Deacon decided to take out a loan to start his own label after he recovered, and he launched GILES in 2003. In February 2004, he debuted his first collection at London Fashion Week, styled by his friend Katie Grand, with models Karen Elson, Lily Cole, Eva Herzigova, and Linda Evangelista walking the runway. The collection was met with international acclaim, sparking renewed interest in London fashion. Deacon has shown at London Fashion Week on several occasions, and the GILES collection has been purchased by over thirty retail stores, including Barneys, Harvey Nichols, and Selfridges. Deacon’s clients included Thandie Newton, Princess Beatrice, and Scarlett Johansson.
Several actresses have worn Deacon’s gowns to red carpet events, including Cate Blanchett and Kerry Washington. Deacon stated in 2009 that since launching his label, he has seen his turnover double every year and his sales increase during the recession. His studio is located in East London at the Truman Brewery.
Following the dismissal of Estrella Archs, it was announced in April 2010 that Deacon had been appointed creative director at Ungaro. Deacon is the house’s fifth designer hire since it was sold to entrepreneur Asim Abdullah in 2005. After two years of showing his collection in Paris, Deacon returned to London Fashion Week on September 19, 2010. In October 2010, Deacon debuted his first collection for Ungaro. On their website, Vogue previewed the new collection, which was designed by Deacon, styled by Grand, and accessorized by Katie Hillier and Stephen Jones. Dolly Jones, a Vogue reporter, called the collection one of the “most hotly anticipated shows” of the week, adding, “[Deacon] looks like he’ll be credited with bringing the house of Ungaro back to life, at long last.”
Deacon began appearing in the Channel 4 entertainment series New Look Style the Nation in June 2011. The designer served alongside New Look’s creative director Barbara Horspool on a panel tasked with selecting a “exceptional new fashion stylist” from a pool of contestants who demonstrated creativity and style. The winner would be hired as a stylist by New Look. Deacon previously served as a judge on Britain’s Next Top Model. Ungaro and Deacon announced on September 15 that they had “mutually decided” to end their collaboration.
