When Letourneau was 34, in the summer of 1996, her relationship with the 12 or 13-year-old Fualaau turned from platonic to sexual. On June 18, 1996, police came upon her in a car with Fualaulau in a marina parking lot. She was seen jumping into the front seat of the car while he pretended to sleep in the back. She pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree child rape and her sentence was reduced to six months in jail and three years of sex offender treatment.

She served her sentence in the Washington Corrections Center for Women.
Fualaau fall from high school and the custody of his mother’s two children was awarded. He battled depressive depression and alcoholism and in March 1999 attempted to commit suicide. On 4 August 2004, Letourneau was set free from jail and classified as a sex offender at Class 2 on the next day. Fualaau convinced the court to overturn the decree of no communication and married her on 20 May 2005. He applied for separation in May 2017, after nearly 12 years of marriage, and subsequently withdrew the registration. In December 2015, Barbara Walters’ television series Current American Scandals covered this case. In April 2018, Fualaau worked as a licensed DJ and a home renovation firm. As a legal clerk, Letourneau served. In August 2019 the pair concluded a civil split.
