George Career

After college, Wallace moved to New York City to pursue his childhood dream of becoming an entertainer. Acting was initially difficult to come by, and Wallace worked as a salesman for an advertising agency to pay the bills. Wallace’s breakthrough came when one of his clients opened a comedy club. The club owner was impressed by Wallace’s sense of humor and positive attitude and offered him a chance to do stand-up. In 1977, Wallace became the first person to wear a formal uniform and call himself “The Right Reverend Dr. George Wallace.” His daily routine is entirely improvised. He spent many years in New York City honing his craft and living with friends and fellow comedian Jerry Seinfeld.

In 1978, Wallace moved West, where he quickly became known as a talented performer. After one of his performances, the producers of “The Redd Foxx Show” asked him to write a script for the popular series. But just a year after writing it, Wallace returned to the stage. He became a regular at the Comedy Store in West Hollywood, California, which also sold merchandise from artists such as Richard Pryor, Rodney Dangerfield, Roseanne Barr, Jay Works, Jay Leno and Robin Williams. Wallace also performed comedy shows on the road, opening for the likes of George Benson, Diana Ross, Donna Summer and Smokey Robinson.

Wallace was named Best Actor at the 1995 American Comedy Awards. He explains that his daily ritual draws inspiration from every moment of life. His commentary also proved popular with radio listeners. Wallace became a regular guest on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and later on popular radio with Isaac Hayes on the former WRKS Radio in New York City. He also starred in his own HBO special and has appeared on various television programs, including The Night Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and The Late Show with David Letterman.

In December 2007, Wallace fell and injured himself onstage during a special performance at the Bellagio Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. He sued the Bellagio Theatre, alleging negligence after tripping over a loose wire on stage. In April 2014, a Las Vegas jury ruled in Wallace’s favor, awarding him $1.3 million. After winning the lawsuit against the Bellagio, Wallace announced that he was ending his decade-long career in Las Vegas headliners to pursue another career. “There’s so much to do.
