George Lessens Career
Since the 1965 Palm Sunday tornadoes in West Michigan, George has been fascinated by weather. He grew up in Lowell, Michigan, and as a kid, he founded a weather club to look for storms and tornadoes. Despite the fact that he has never seen a tornado, he has been in the path of numerous of these storms.
A tiny tornado struck his hometown in the early morning hours of his 21st birthday. George was alerted to the approaching storm by his family members. The Lowell Showboat was demolished, a church steeple was fallen, and the surrounding hamlet was severely damaged. During the July 4, 1991 holiday weekend, he rode out a “derecho” windstorm in a van parked beneath a highway bridge overpass!
On May 31, 1998, another “derecho” struck West Michigan, and he spent the night in the 13 ON YOUR SIDE studios, co-anchoring nearly 12 hours of continuous severe weather coverage. George has been acknowledged and rewarded with numerous honors during his time at 13 ON YOUR SIDE.
He received the “Silver Circle” award from the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences in March 2009 for 25 years or more of service. He has also won the Michigan Association of Broadcasters’ “Best Weathercast” award nine times, in 2015, 2013, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2005, and 2003. He has also won the “Merit Weathercast” award four times, in 2003, 2007, 2012, and 2017. In 2005 and 2009, George won Michigan Emmy Awards for Weather.
In 2008, he was named a “Distinguished Alumnus” by Grand Rapids Community College, and he is also a “Distinguished Alumnus” by Lowell High School.
