George Dzundza Career
Dzundza began acting on the advice of another student during his freshman year of college. His professional stage debut, however, was in a 1973 production of King Lear at the New York Shakespeare Festival. Dzundza played the owner of a “Store 364” convenience store in Inglewood, California, in the 1981 sitcom series Open All Night. In the 1981 television film Skokie, he played American Nazi leader Frank Collin. Dzundza starred in No Way Out as Sam Hesselman, a disabled man in a wheelchair, and in The Beast as Commander Daskal. His other notable film roles include The Deer Hunter, White Hunter, Black Heart, Streamers, and Basic Instinct. He was a founding member of the NBC drama Law & Order, playing NYPD Sergeant Max.
He was disappointed to learn that Law & Order would be more of an ensemble show than one starring him. Though his coworkers admired his portrayal of Greevey, they grew increasingly uneasy around Dzundza, who was also stressed from his commute between New York City and his home in Los Angeles. Dzundza left the show after the first season, making his final full appearance in the season finale, “The Blue Wall.” In the second season premiere episode, “Confession,” his character (played by an extra with his back to the camera) was murdered.
Other credits include an appearance on The Waltons (1975), playing the Archie Bunker-like father in the short-lived Christina Applegate sitcom Jesse, and voicing supervillains the Ventriloquist and Perry White in Batman: The Animated Series, as well as numerous minor roles such as G. Carl Francis and Dr. Gregory Belson in both shows. Among his Broadway credits are Terrence McNally’s The Ritz. He appeared as Anubis (aka “Jim”) in the Stargate SG-1 Season 8 episode “Threads” in 2005. On Grey’s Anatomy, Dzundza played George O’Malley’s father Harold.
