George Anastasia Biography
George Anastasia is a former Philadelphia Inquirer columnist and author. He is largely regarded as an authority on the American Mafia.

Anastasia was born in South Philadelphia and raised in the South Jersey town of Westville. He graduated from Gloucester Catholic High School in 1965 and attended Dartmouth College, where he majored in French literature. In addition, he attended Swarthmore College and the University of Florida.

He was an organized crime investigative reporter who was once assassinated by former Philadelphia mob boss John Stanfa. He received the Sigma Delta Chi Award and was hailed on 60 Minutes as “one of the most respected crime reporters in the country.” Anastasia currently resides in Pitman, New Jersey. Anastasia has worked as an adjunct professor/lecturer at Glassboro State College, now Rowan University, and Temple University, as well as a lecturer for the United States State Department-sponsored series of weeklong journalism and organized crime seminars in Bulgaria (2004, 2007), Croatia (2005), Serbia (2006), and Italy (2007).
The former Philadelphia Inquirer reporter is the author of six books, including The Last Gangster (ReganBooks/Harper Collins, March 2004), a New York Times bestseller about the Philadelphia mob’s demise. Blood and Honor (William Morrow & Co., 1991), which Jimmy Breslin called “the best gangster book ever written”; The Summer Wind (Regan Books/HarperCollins, 1999), about the Thomas Capano-Anne Marie Fahey murder case; and The Goodfella Tapes (Avon Books, 1998), Mobfather (Kensington Books, 1993), and The Ultimate Book of Gangster Movies (Perseus Books, 2011). His work has appeared in Penthouse, Playboy, and The Village Voice, among other publications.
He has also appeared in various network television news magazine pieces regarding organized crime, and he has served as a consultant on projects for ABC, Discovery Channel, History Channel, and National Geographic Channel. Anastasia is the author of The Big Hustle (Philadelphia Inquirer Books, 2001), a novella, and has contributed to two collections of Italian American writers, A Sitdown with the Sopranos and Don’t Tell Momma. Camino Books published Mob Files, a collection of his stories for The Inquirer, in September 2008. Anastasia co-hosts the YouTube channel “MobTalk” with FOX 29’s Dave Schratweiser. The channel provides current information about organized crime.
