Gene began his broadcasting career in 1983 as a sports writer and producer at WJCC-AM Radio (now WDIS AM 1170) in Norfolk, Massachusetts. He began his career in television news in 1986, covering sports at WBBH-TV in Fort Myers, Florida, and in 1988 he became a sports anchor at WLNE-TV in Providence, Rhode Island, where he anchored WSBK-TV.
