He later attended Anderson University in Indiana and, after graduation, went to Chico, California to work for KHSL Radio before moving on to KCRA-AM and KCRA TV as a sports reporter before finally joining NBC and ESPN, where he specialized in motorsports coverage. In the early 1980s, he also called play-by-play for NBC’s NFL coverage, and he had the opportunity to cover the 1988 Summer Olympics for the network.
Gerould was hired as the Kansas City Kings’ radio play-by-play announcer in 1985, when the team relocated to Sacramento.
