Abernathy got his start in journalism as a reporter for the Hillsboro Press Gazette (now The Times-Gazette). In 1983, he was named city editor, and in 1985, he was named editor. He left the Press Gazette in 1991 to become city editor of The Marion Star. He moved to the Portsmouth Daily Times in 1993, where he was managing editor until 1996. Abernathy was appointed communications director of the Ohio Republican Party in January 1998. Abernathy was named executive director of the West Virginia Republican Party in October 2001. He was fired in 2004 after accusing the party’s chairman, Kris Warner, of spending too much money on his brother Monty’s gubernatorial campaign. In 2008, he returned as executive director. He also advised John McCain, West Virginia State Senator Russ Weeks, and Senate contender John Raese. He has also worked for United States Senators George Voinovich and Rob Portman, as well as an Ohio representative. Abernathy was appointed publisher of the Times-Gazette and Highland County Shopper in 2011. He took over as publisher and editor of the papers in 2015. In the 2016 presidential election, he led the Times-Gazette in granting Donald Trump an unusual newspaper endorsement, which was ordinary among the paper’s Highland County readers but drew international notice. Abernathy joined The Washington Post as a contributing columnist in 2017 to help diversify its editorial pages with a conservative viewpoint from beyond the Beltway.

He began producing two to three columns per month, which are sent to hundreds of newspapers across the United States by the Washington Post Writers Group. He also began appearing as a political analyst on the PBS NewsHour, filling in for David Brooks. Abernathy was appointed to the Board of County Commissioners by the Highland County Republican Central Committee on July 2, 2018. Abernathy resigned as Times-Gazette publisher and editor to serve as a commissioner. Later that year, he was re-elected in a general election. On October 2, 2020, he resigned in order to relocate to the Cincinnati region.
