Strickland played Sister Ann on The Mary Tyler Moore Show’s season-four episode “Almost a Nun’s Story” in 1973. She made a famous appearance in the television series M*A*S*H as Captain Helen Whitfield, a nurse struggling with alcoholism. She played Courtney, Jerry’s love interest, in the Bob Newhart Show episodes “Jerry Robinson Crusoe” (3.13) and “My Boy Guillermo” (4.19). She played the public defender in the television series Night Court’s inaugural episode. She also appeared in the fourth episode of season one of Cagney & Lacey, “Suffer the Children”. Strickland co-starred with Richard Farnsworth in the 1987 Highway to Heaven episode “A Dream of Wild Horses” as a struggling rancher’s daughter.
She portrayed nurse practitioner Marilyn McGrath in the 1988 television series HeartBeat. This was among the first portrayals of a lesbian character on American network television. Strickland played Olive Davis in 11 episodes of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman between 1993 and 1994. She appeared in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Paradise” as Alixus. She played Mrs. Landis of Doubleday in the Seinfeld season-six episodes “The Chaperone” and “The Switch” from 1994 to 1995. In the first season episode “War Crimes” of the US Navy series JAG, she played envoy Bartlett, the US envoy to Peru. In the 1995 film The American President, Strickland plays Esther MacInerney, the wife of A.J.MacInerney (Martin Sheen), President Andrew Shepherd’s (Michael Douglas) chief of staff. She played Dr. Rene Spielman on ER season six, episode six, “The Peace of Wild Things”. Strickland was a cast member in the brief run of the 2002 CBS television series First Monday, playing a Supreme Court justice.
