Fred Armisen dropped out of the School of Visual Arts in 1988 and relocated to Chicago with his friend Damon Locks. Trenchmouth was formed, with Armisen as a drummer, Locks as a vocalist and percussionist, Chris DeZutter as a guitarist, and Wayne Montana as a bassist. Snakebite, a post-punk track from their debut LP, was released in 1989. Construction of New Action, their debut studio album, was released in 1991, followed by Inside The Future in 1993 and Trenchmouth Vs. the Light of the Sun in 1994. Volumes, Amplifiers, and Equalizers were released in 1995 (1994)2, and The Broadcasting System was released in 1996.
Fred Armisen began his television career in 1997 with Reverb, a weekly HBO music television series that featured emerging talent. He appeared in 82 episodes as a special correspondent until 2001. Simultaneously, he began dabbling in filmmaking. Guide to Music and South by Southwest, as well as Fred Armisen’s Guide to Dance and Self-Defense, were his two short films. In them, he interviewed celebrities, employing a distinct accent and mannerism that propelled him to the forefront of the comedy world.
