Frank Somerville Career

While attending San Francisco State, Somerville worked as an intern at KTVU in 1981. He worked at local stations in Santa Rosa, California, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Providence, Rhode Island after graduating before returning to the San Francisco Bay Area. He joined KTVU’s morning show in 1992 and was the inaugural anchor of the 5 p.m. newscast when it debuted in 2005. He was designated co-anchor of the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts in 2008, succeeding 40-year veteran Dennis Richmond. Somerville apologized on behalf of KTVU in 2013 for an incident in which racist pilot names were given out on Asiana Airlines Flight 214 during a broadcast.

Following an on-air incident in which he struggled to read the script for numerous stories and looked to slur his words, Somerville took a personal leave of absence from KTVU in June 2021. On August 4, he returned to the anchor chair without addressing the issue that caused his temporary absence. He was suspended for disobedience in September 2021 after attempting to preserve a “tag” about domestic violence and “missing white woman syndrome” in a story about the Gabby Petito case. In an interview with the Bay Area News Group in November 2021, he stated that KTVU had not contacted him and that “all indications are that I’m never going to anchor at Channel 2 again.”

After an automobile accident on December 30, 2021, Somerville was detained on accusations of driving under the influence. Somerville’s ban from KTVU would become permanent when his contract expired in January 2022 and KTVU decided not to re-sign him. He believes that his car accident a month previously had nothing to do with it, and that management had already decided to let him go months before. Somerville announced his departure from the station on Facebook in December 2022.
