Ether, a collection of seven short stories and a novella, was Citkowitz’s first book, published in 2010. Ether was chosen as a New York Times Editors’ Choice and was a New Yorker Book Club selection.

Citkowitz’s debut novel, The Shades, is a psychological thriller that was released on June 19, 2018. The Shades explores the effects of a daughter’s death on a family as they try to cope with their loss. Citkowitz noted that the novel’s purpose was to examine the “fragility of human existence,” and that the original tale came from the idea of “someone returning to their childhood home,” which she then expanded on. One of her key goals was to create characters who seemed “authentic as people” in order to elicit empathy from the reader, which is why she explored the complexities of the occupations and hobbies that each of the characters in the novel pursue, such as pottery.
