Storyline

Oscar Vazquez, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico, is barred from joining the United States Army due to his immigration status. He comes across a video announcement and brochures promoting a Marine Underwater Robotics Competition. NASA and the United States Armed Forces are the competition’s sponsors. Cameron reluctantly agrees to assist in the construction of a robot for the competition. The book tells the story of four Latino teenagers who competed in the Marine Advanced Technology Education Robotics Competition at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2004, as well as their experiences building the robot. Cameron and his team assemble a robot from discarded parts. The team must modify the original design and innovate in the way the robot is built. They finished fourth in the competition’s practical segment with 75 points after failing three tasks. They are later surprised when they are announced as the event’s winners.
