Emma Forrest, at the age of fifteen, wrote a story about Madonna for the London Evening Standard. She left school to write her “Generation X” column for the Sunday Times, writing about various Britpop/indie bands “on the road”. Richey Edwards, a former Manic Street Preachers member, was the first to be interviewed. Forrest has interviewed Snoop Dogg and Brad Pitt for Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Time Out, The Guardian, NME, Interview, and Blackbook. In the autumn of 2011, she contributed an essay to Florence and the Machine’s album Ceremonials, which was included in the CD booklet. Many well-known women, including Helen Oyeyemi, Marian Keyes, and Sarah Jones, have contributed to the book. Your Voice in My Head (2011) is a memoir written by Forrest about the death of her psychiatrist and her subsequent break-up with her partner. The memoir will be adapted into a feature film by Forrest and directed by Francesca Gregorini.
Forrest published her second memoir, Busy Being Free, in August 2022, about her divorce and return to living in London as a single parent. Becoming Music, a screenplay written by Forrest about the late musician Jeff Buckley, was purchased by Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B Entertainment in September 2000. LIARS (AE) was purchased by Scott Rudin at Miramax in 2009, with Richard Linklater attached to direct. She was named one of Variety’s “Top Ten Screenwriters to Watch” in 2009.
