Gerstein worked as a social worker in Manhattan for six years. Gerstein’s first film role was in the 1980 comedy Coast to Coast. Her other 1990s credits include Friends, the HBO TV movie Witch Hunt, the 1994 Phyllis Nagy’s Girls Bar (as an actress), and the 1999 TV musical “Annie”. The film later won the 2015 Best Short Film Award and the Festival Fest People’s Choice Award for Best Feature Film. Gerstein starred in “The Tragedy of West Utica”, which premiered at the 2011 LA LUPA Fest One Act Festival. Gerstein’s 2010 credits include “Liza on Demand”, “Shameless”, “Fresh Off the Boat”, and “The Morning Show”. Gerstein was scheduled to play one of the lead roles in the 2014 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama “Mother Night”, but had to withdraw due to health reasons. He is also working as a developer on the project.
Gerstein won a Platinum Award at the 2015 Spotlight Short Film Awards for his short film “Stand With Me”. He produced, directed, acted in, and wrote an original song for the project. Gerstein portrayed Madame Manfredi in the 2018 film “Venom”, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. He also starred in the 2019 independent film Turnover.
