He began showing his talent in New York City comedy clubs, and began his career in 1989 by competing in the Johnnie Walker Comedy Search and performing on Saturday Night Live at short film producer Neal Marshad’s South Street comedy club Caroline’s. In 1991, he appeared on Def Comedy Jam, had a supporting role on the second season of In Color, and was noticed by the producers of Saturday Night Live.
Cleghorne joined Saturday Night Live in 1991 and remained with the program for four seasons, until 1995. During his tenure, he influenced the likes of Alfre Woodard, Dr. Dre, Anita Baker, Florence Griffith Joyner, Debbie Allen, Mary J. Blige, Natalie Cole, Patti LaBelle, Marla Gibbs, Robin Quivers, Toni Morrison, Jocelyn Elder, Tina Turner, and many others still to come. She also had two recurring roles: Zoraida (an NBC page) and Queen Shenequa (who appeared in several Weekend Update sketches). Cleghorn became the third black woman to star on “Saturday Night Live,” following Yvonne Hudson and Daniella Vance, and the first interracial woman to be a regular on the show for more than one season. She later said, “I was the first black actress to sign on. If you read or research, they weren’t giving black people contracts on SNL. That’s cold-blooded. They don’t even give them credit. The final scores come in and your name isn’t on them. That’s a joke because that’s how you get the scraps. We didn’t get along with some of the actors during the show.
