Elfi Schlegel Career
Schlegel cemented her place as one of the top gymnasts in Canadian history (at the time) by winning gold medals in the all-around and team categories at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta. She won a bronze medal as the third-best gymnast in the 1979 Pan American Games in San Juan, Puerto Rico, two silver medals for uneven bars and vault, and a gold medal as a part of the first-place Canadian team. She also earned a bronze medal in the vault at the 1980 World Cup in Toronto, becoming Canada’s first World Cup medalist.
She was named to the Canadian national team for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russia, but was unable to compete because Canada joined the United States-led boycott of the Moscow Games in protest of the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. She tried to make the Canadian Olympic teams in 1984 and 1988, but was supplanted by younger and more talented gymnasts due to the expanding depth of Canadian gymnastics. Schlegel wanted to participate after graduating from high school, but Canadian universities did not provide intercollegiate gymnastics competition or athletic scholarships.
She started her broadcasting career as a part-time gymnastics commentator for CTV, then went to CBC for the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and has been an Olympic broadcaster for NBC Sports since 1992. Her ninth Olympics as a broadcaster were the Summer Olympics in 2012. In Sydney and Athens from 2000 and 2004, she worked as an analyst for both artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, as well as a trampoline reporter. She has covered curling events at the 2002, 2006, and 2010 Winter Olympics. From 1993 to 1999, she covered skiing and major horse racing events, including the Breeders Cup, for NBC Sports.
From 1992 to 2012, Elfi worked as a gymnastics analyst for NBC alongside Tim Daggett and Al Trautwig. After the 2012 Olympics, NBC decided to replace Elfi with 2008 Olympic All Around Gold Medalist Nastia Liukin. This choice was made due to Liukin’s recent success and NBC’s desire to have an All-American commentary panel. Elfi currently occasionally provides gymnastics analysis for Canadian television alongside Kyle Shewfelt. She also covered gymnastics for CBC Sports from 1989 to 1994.
