She also presented the local light-news television show Viets Beat, for which she received Emmy awards in 1989 and 1990. Viets moved to Washington, D.C., and left the St. Louis Post-Dispatch to write a syndicated column for United Feature Syndicate, which was ultimately acquired by United Media. She also began writing mystery novels and finally quit the newspaper industry to pursue a full-time career as a writer. Viets first used her work knowledge to write four novels set in St. Louis and featured fictional St. Louis newspaper columnist Francesca Vierling (with intriguing discussion about whether characters might be real-life Post-Dispatch figures).
She is a board member for the Mystery Writers of America. In 2004, she was nominated for three Agatha awards. In 2005, she won two important mystery convention honors for Best Short novella: an Agatha Award at Malice Domestic Ltd and an Anthony Award at Bouchercon for her novella Wedding Knife. On April 11, 2007, Viets’ colleagues contributors to The Lipstick Chronicles revealed that he had suffered a stroke.
