Bluestone created the iconic cover art for the magazine’s 1973 Death issue. The headline read, “If You Don’t Buy This Magazine We’ll Kill This Dog,” and it showed a dog with a gun to his head.
“Telling a Kid His Parents are Dead” and “23 Ways to Be Offensive at the Funeral of Someone You Didn’t Like” are two more pieces that Bluestone wrote for the Death issue. That year, it was the magazine’s best-selling item. The Lampoon cover was rated as number seven on the 2005 list of the “Top 40 Magazine Covers of the Last 40 Years” by the American Society of Magazine Editors. It was also one of five covers mentioned in a 2018 The Guardian piece titled “The best magazine covers ever?” From 1973 to 1978, Bluestone was featured in a syndicated column titled “My Favorite Jokes” that was published nationwide in American newspapers. An anonymous “editor” would begin each column with a letter, offering tidbits of information about Bluestone.
In 1975, he made an appearance on Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell. In 1976, he had three appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. In addition to being a roaster on the Gabe Kaplan and Peter Marshall episodes of The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast that aired in 1977, Bluestone made appearances on the Dean Martin variety shows Dean Martin’s Comedyworld in 1974 and Dean’s Place in 1976. George Schlatter, the producer of Laugh-In, went to The Improv to locate performers for the 1977 revival of the show. He struck me with a single line, Schlatter said to the Washington Post. It said, ‘He’s a quadrasexual. It implies that he will do everything to get a quarter out of anyone. As soon as I hear that. Both the club and I lost our minds.”
