Dustin’s career began in February 2004, when he began planning the launch of Facebook with roommates Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Chris Hughes, and friend Andrew McCollum. Facebook was created as an online database directory for Harvard students to use as a search tool for fellow members. It was given the domain name thefacebook.com. However, in June 2004, the team took a year off and relocated to California to work on Facebook’s global expansion. Along with investor Sean Parker, they hired eight new employees. Dustin was Facebook’s lead programmer and technical department head.
Dustin, according to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, learned programming in a matter of days and joined the team as a programmer. Dustin was Facebook’s first CTO and VP of Engineering. As he oversaw Facebook’s architecture and operations, he played an important role in its growth. Dustin had a 7.6% stake in Facebook. On October 3, 2008, he announced his departure from Facebook to co-found Asana, a web application. He and his partner, Justin Rosenstein, successfully co-founded Asana. Asana was successfully launched out of Beta in 2011. It is a mobile web application that facilitates team collaboration on team projects without the use of e-mail.
Dustin is also known for investing in ‘Path,’ a mobile photo-sharing website founded by David Morin, a former Facebook engineer. Dustin’s advice is said to have been crucial in convincing Morin to turn down a buyout offer from Google. He also invested in Vicarious, an artificial intelligence company. He and his wife, Cari Tuna, founded Good Ventures, a philanthropic organization. Good Ventures has contributed approximately $100 million to programs that support Malaria eradication, the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative, the Deworm the World Initiative, and GiveDirectly. He and Cari were the youngest couple to sign Warren Buffet and Bill Gates ‘Giving Pledge,’ which commits billionaires to donate a significant portion of their wealth to charity. Dustin is working on a joint collaboration with GiveWell which has led to a new spinoff. This is called the Open Philanthropy Project, with an aim of innovating a way to use large sums of money, starting with the wealth of Dustin himself, for the betterment of society.
