Weathers served in the United States Army during the Korean War, after which he re-enlisted and was assigned to Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah in 1954, according to a biography provided by WTOC-TV. He started as a film editor for WTOC-TV when it first broadcast in 1954. He worked his way up to operating the projector, operating the studio cameras, and assisting with the news broadcast production. He was promoted to news director and presenter in 1962. When WJCL-TV gained the ability to broadcast in color in 1973, he left WTOC-TV to present the news at WJCL-TV. WJCL was ranked last in the 6 p.m. news ratings at the time. Until his retirement in 2001, he was the head of news and public affairs and the host of WTOC The News at Six. Weathers’ style hasn’t changed much over the years.
