Doug McKelway Career
McKelway’s first television news job was at WPCQ-TV (now WCNC-TV) in Charlotte, North Carolina, from 1980 to 1982. Before returning to Washington, he worked in Kansas, Missouri, and Florida. He worked for WRC-TV as a reporter and news anchor until October 2001, when he moved to WJLA-TV.
McKelway conducted a live interview with blogger Michael Rogers on May 13, 2009, as co-host of Washington, DC’s Let’s Talk Live on local cable’s TBD TV (Formerly News Channel 8), where they addressed Rogers’ efforts to “out” secretly gay politicians who oppose gay rights. “I’d take you outside and throw you a punch across the face… I think you’re hurting innocent people,” McKelway said at one point.
McKelway covered a rally by religious and environmental groups criticizing BP’s reaction to the Gulf oil spill live during the noon newscast in July 2010. McKelway made remarks about BP’s support for Democratic President Barack Obama. Following the broadcast, McKelway met with WJLA Station Manager Bill Lord, who objected to the BP contribution facts being revealed in the live report, and McKelway was suspended from his reporting duties as well as anchoring the early-morning Good Morning, Washington news show, following a heated exchange. McKelway was later fired, according to the Washington Post, on September 17, 2010. He has since been hired by Fox News Channel, where he now works as a reporter.
