Harewood got his start in musical theatre. On Broadway, he appeared in Two Gentlemen of Verona, Streamers, and The Mighty Gents. Harewood was named Most Promising Actor by Theatre World for his performance in Don’t Call Back. While in a stage performance with Bette Davis, she urged Harewood to continue performing in dramatic parts, and he considers her a mentor. He made his film debut with Foster and Laurie (1975). Harewood played Simon Haley (the father of novelist Alex Haley) in the ABC miniseries Roots: The Next Generations. He is well recognized for his portrayal of Jesse Owens in The Jesse Owens Story and his co-starring role as police psychologist Paul Strobber in the ABC television series Strike Force (starring Robert Stack).
His cinematic credits include the catastrophe film Gray Lady Down (1978), the action drama Tank (1984), and the sci-fi thriller Solar Crisis (1990). He portrayed a football player in Against All Odds (1984) and worked alongside Timothy Hutton in The Falcon and the Snowman (1985). Harewood later played a military veteran in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket (1987). He acted in two films in 2003, playing Mackie Whitaker in Levity and Teddy Howard in Gothika. In 1994, he received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, Mini-Series, or Television Movie for his recurring role as jazz/blues saxophonist Clarence “Cool Papa” Charleston on the NBC drama series I’ll Fly Away.
He also played Dr. Julian Wilkes in the NBC (later syndicated) TV series Viper and Rev. Morgan Hamilton on 7th Heaven. Harewood portrayed Eliot Pierce in the Showtime series The Hoop Life. Harewood received his second NAACP Image Award nomination, this time for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, in 2000 He has also dabbled in music, singing the national anthem in the 1994 Orange Bowl and releasing an album titled Love Will Stop Calling in 1988. Harewood began his career as a voice actor in the 1980s, performing animated creatures. He voiced A.C. in The California Raisin Show and played Dan Riley in Batman. Harewood would play Shredder on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Harewood played Rhodey Rhodes, also known as War Machine, in Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. He played Modo in the 1993-96 film Biker Mice from Mars, which he also repeated in the 2006-08 revival. Harewood has appeared in almost 100 film and television productions, but has only publicly voiced remorse over one: the miniseries Beulah Land, in which he played an overseer named Floyd. He was dissatisfied with the film’s script and declared himself “unhappy” and “embarrassed” with the completed product. Harewood has indicated that he will only accept jobs that he believes reflect positive representations of African-Americans.
