Donna Steichen Career
Steichen was a school teacher and religious educator before becoming known for her work, and she was active in the pro-life movement from its inception. She was vice-president and president of the Minnesota chapter of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights from 1980 to 1986. Steichen is best known for her top-selling 1991 book Ungodly Rage: The Hidden Face of Catholic Feminism, which was a critical examination of the impact of feminism on American Catholicism. During the 1980s, Steichen, like many others in the Catholic Church, became concerned about how many Church employees, including women religious, were expressing ethical values that contradicted those enshrined in encyclicals such as Casti connubii (Chaste Marriage) and Humanae vitae.
Steichen was particularly interested in the connections she saw between feminism and wicca, or “witchcraft,” as she referred to it in her book. Steichen argued persuasively in Ungodly Rage that these attitudes were opposed to revealed teaching and that the dissenters were essentially practicing a religion fundamentally distinct from that taught by the Church. It elevated Steichen, who had previously published in modest Catholic publications, to the forefront of the movement to restore orthodoxy within the Church. She rose to prominence as a lecturer in North America, England, Ireland, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines. Some have even suggested that Steichen influenced Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI.
