Whitfield’s television career began with a recurring role as Robert Foreman on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. He later appeared for two years on the NBC daytime soap series Another World. From 1991 until 1994, Whitfield played Terrence Frye on the ABC Daytime soap series All My Children. The character earned him three Daytime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series, as well as two Soap Opera Digest Awards.[Unreliable source?] After leaving daytime television, Whitfield appeared in the short-lived Fox sitcom The Crew during the 1995-96 season. In 1997, he co-starred with Kadeem Hardison in another short-lived sitcom, Between Brothers.
He had a dramatic role in the 2000 UPN series Secret Agent Man, which was similarly cancelled after one season. From 2002 to 2003, he co-starred with Tamara Taylor in another short-lived sitcom on NBC called Hidden Hills. Whitfield played a recurring part on the UPN sitcom Girlfriends from 2001 to 2002. He’s also appeared in The Jamie Foxx Show, NYPD Blue, Strong Medicine, Ghost Whisperer, CSI: Miami, Cold Case, and Grey’s Anatomy. Whitfield has acted in films with Vivica A. Fox, including Two Can Play That Game (2001) and The Salon (2004). He co-starred in White Man’s Burden (1995), Mr. 3000 (2003), and Middle of Nowhere (2012).
He co-starred alongside his wife Salli Richardson in the 2009 film Pastor Brown, as well as guest-starred on Eureka (where he played Richardson’s on-screen brother) and Stitchers. Whitfield also appeared on Make It or Break It and Mistresses as Rochelle Aytes’ husband. Whitfield appeared on BET’s reality comedy series Real Husbands of Hollywood in 2015.
